1. (Bot.) A biennial plant of the genus Beta, which

year.

stock, or in making sugar.
Note: There are many varieties of the common beet ({Beta
vulgaris}). The Old ``white beet'', cultivated for its
edible leafstalks, is a distinct species ({Beta
Cicla}).
