alka.] (Zo["o]l.)
A name given to various species of arctic sea birds of the
family Alcid[ae]. The great auk, now extinct, is {Alca (or
Plautus) impennis}. The razor-billed auk is A. torda. See
Puffin, Guillemot, and Murre.
