contrary; opposite; conflicting; as, adverse winds; an
adverse party; a spirit adverse to distinctions of caste.

3. In hostile opposition to; unfavorable; unpropitious;
contrary to one's wishes; unfortunate; calamitous;
afflictive; hurtful; as, adverse fates, adverse
circumstances, things adverse.
